Changing Worlds

Changing Worlds

Hammers ringing in the background, Mark Crumbley stands coffee cup in hand having just finished a night shift at work. Things have been looking up for Mark and his family since World Changers has arrived. Mark had met hard times while he was out of work, he and his young family moved into this small home year and a half ago. The small yard provides little privacy with no protection; Mark was concerned for his seven-year-old stepdaughters safety. Now “Level Heads” are out to provide that security. The crew made up of mainly junior high students, dig post holes, pour concrete level beams and nail planks: “We’re building a fence for Mark and Erin Crumbley they wanted some privacy from people driving into their yard and just walking up. They have a seven year old daughter and they just want protection over her and their family,” said fourteen-year-old Anna Grace Dison of Deerfield Church, Lawrenceburg Tennessee. “Before anybody could walk through the backyard…I feel safer with the fence up, for the protection of my family and myself,” Said homeowner Mark Crumbley. The students have worked all week building the Crumbley’s fence in the Texas heat but you won’t hear the Level Heads complaining: “It’s a great time. It’s so fun to help others and to spread the Gospel,” exclaimed 12-year-old Tyler Harden of Cana Baptist. “It’s a great feeling to share the Gospel with this neighborhood and the homeowners. I love being here this is my fourth World Changers and it’s just been amazing. It’s changed my life,” admits Anna Grace. Since World Changers arrived at the Crumbley home, Mark was offered a new job. The students were overjoyed to tell about how God had answered this prayer. Now Mark’s seven year old can play in the safety of their enclosed backyard. Mark’s gratitude for the act of kindness was felt: “It gives me a real appreciation for kids. They’re just donating their time to do something like this that is a really good cause.”

Worship

Worship

Students have been seeking to change the world of the homeowner and neighbors in the Lubbock community yet many are finding their own world’s impacted by what they are learning at World Changers. Worship Speaker Larry Williams teaches what it means to live a Set Apart life every evening. Students were asked to take stock of their lives and see themselves the way Isaiah saw himself in front of God’s throne (Isaiah 6:1-8).  Kristie Allen of Lakeside Baptist Church said, “One night, we just started reading the word during the message and it all just clicked, what God was speaking to us and what God was speaking out of Larry it all came together and it was one big Wow moment of it all clicking.”

Concert of Prayer occurred last night with students being challenged in unique ways to have confession, Give Thanks, Supplication and Praise. Students nailed their sins to a cross, prayed for each other’s need and wrote praise to God on a praise banner. The night was filled with God presence, students worshiped God in spirit and in truth.

Impacting Lives

Good Ole Memories and a Fresh Look

Tucked between newer residential housing stood a visibly aging house.  The brown paneling was from another age. Home owner Jerry Brown can remember, back when his father-in-law built this house, the dirt road, chicken pens, and empty lots surrounding: “there was nothing but country, everything was dirt roads, even main street. That was back in 1962.” Jerry Brown and his wife Paula have very unique memories wrapped up in this old house. “We were married here, in the house. We decided to go ahead and have the ceremony right here in the house! That’s probably the fondest memory I have of the house” stated Mr. Brown.

Forty-six years later and the house exterior changed little aside from the aging of the material. New brick houses on every side of the Brown’s residence demonstrate its need for improvement. The Cool Caulkers and Hand Saws have come to makeover the Brown’s home. “It’s hard to get any savings so it would have probably just stayed until one of my kiddos might have come out and painted, we probably wouldn’t have been able to do anything especially on the labor part, that’s the great thing about it is the labor…it’s a great Crew and a great bunch of students. Couldn’t ask for anything better!” said Mr. Brown. Seventeen year old, Jacob Marsh of Burleson Texas said, “We are working for God’s glory…we’re doing siding and walls and putting in new windows, will eventually paint over it and make it look like a beautiful new house!” World Changers students scurry about on all four sides of the house, siding, painting and making minor repairs. Several students have met Mr. Brown and describe him as a jolly man: “He is just so happy, and being able to talk to him is awesome because he’ll tell us about the history of the house and he loves the fact that we’re here. I’m very excited that we can fix up his house to help it blend in with the rest of the neighborhood,” said 18 year old Kristie Allen of Dallas Texas. Mr. Brown gratefulness can be felt through his merry heart: “I’m just so thankful for the students… we wouldn’t be able to do it without them.”

The student not only are helping homeowners by repairing houses they also seek opportunities to share Christ love with neighbors in the community.  “People usually see the mission field as something far off in the distance and we forget about the people who are in our own neighborhood. I Think it is really important that we minster to these people” said Brooke Chronister college students at Texas ANM. Other Crew member echoed Brooke’s feelings: “I’ve done this several years and I still can’t get over the fact of how many live we change by just painting a house and people walking by… I just love seeing people realizing that we came to do this for them, and that we can reach them,” said Kristie Allen. Jacob Marsh took every opportunity offered him to reach out to the neighbors around his worksite: “I got to talk and pray with nine people yesterday… It’s been a blessing for our youth pastor to take us to this, I’ve learned how to help people, I’ve learned how to grow in God, it’s made my relationship with God stronger.”

Get Ready to Change the World!

12 Churches from Texas and one from Oklahoma arrived today with 250 students and adult leaders ready to Change the World! Students unloaded trailers and rolled out air mattresses. Students will spend their days restoring hope to communities by repairing lower income housing. In the evening students will explore what it means to be Set Apart. The World Changers Lubbock Staff is excited to meet all the students offering their hard earned money, a week of summer break and their love for those who are in need. Students will be on 18 work sites scraping paint, building wheel chair ramps, and building relationships. Three Crews will help facilitate Vacation Bible Schools.
